WELCOME!

MakeGames.PNG

If you are reading this after listening to my talk about making games... Thank you! You are really close to making a game. Check next slide to remember what you need :)

MY "PLAY" LIST:

  1. Play some of the free games I recommend somewhere around here.

  2. Learn something new with a Explorable Explanation.

  3. Generate a Game Definition you like.

  4. Play a Board Game you have never listened about before.

  5. Go to an Escape Room somewhere in your city.

  6. Make a game (following the 6 steps tutorial, or ignoring it).

  7. Participate in an online Game Jam at itch.io.

6 STEPS TO MAKE A GAME

Remember that you can either obey or disregard this tutorial... Just make games!

STEP 1: FIND A TOPIC

Why should I constrain myself to a topic?

In my opinion, the most difficult part is to come up with the first idea. Focusing on a single topic focus your attention and boosts your creativity. And of course, if you think of something absolutely different, you can always change the topic!

Ok, then... how can I choose the topic?

You can either search something random in Google, look for a prompt generator, think of a previous or future experience, a dream, a feeling... Just go wild!

But which topic is a good topic?

Depending on whom you ask. In my opinion, almost all of them are. Some may be a bit difficult to turn into 'playable' things (I have REALLY weird dreams), but never say never!

ANY QUESTION?

If you have any doubt about the resources in here, send me an email and let's try to sort it out!

BOOKS

Read the first chapter of Anna Anthropy's Rise of the Video Game Zinesters. She explains quite better than me why you should make games, especially if you are an amateur, artist, dreamer, dropout, queer, housewife or anything else.

After that, just check this books out, in case they may help you as they helped me:

-  A theory of Fun (Jesse Schell)

The Art of Game Design (Ralph Koster)

After these ones, I could recommend more books on specific topics, like gamification, game feel, flow... But the basics are up there.
